Srebrenica - Commemoration on the 10th anniversary in Bosnia – weak refugee protection for Bosnian refugees in Germany
 
On Sunday and Monday, 10-11 July 2005 there has been the 10th anniversary of the massacre of Srebrenica. On this occasion 50.000 people came to the memorial site at Potocari. On the other hand, refugee protection status and hence the conditions to stay of the 170.000 Bosnian refugees living in Germany is problematical, as told the German integration representative, Marie Louise Beck.

WARSAW - Last week, Vice President of the European Commission Franco Frattini, responsible for Justice, Freedom and Security, and Luxembourg Justice minister Luc Frieden, on behalf of the EU Presidency, were in Poland for a visit to the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States (FRONTEX Agency).

German asylum procedure under attack - experts call on the refugee agency to rebuild trust in asylum seekers
BERLIN – on the occasion of the world refugee day on Monday 20 June 2005 the German Institute for Human Rights and UNHCR jointly convened the 5th refugee symposium in Berlin. Around 400 experts discussed current problems of refugee protection as human rights protection. A group of ten asylum, human rights, lawyer’s and charity organisations presented the „Memorandum II: today’s situation of the German asylum procedure” which has been discussed controversially.

Germany deports single migrant women and elderly migrants to Afghanistan

HAMBURG/ FRANKFURT AM MAIN – The German Federal State Hamburg already did begin to deport people to Afghanistan in May 2005. The Federal State Hesse has planned to deport Afghans home, too. Hesse focuses on single women and elderly people up to 70 years old. In the view of the security and human rights situation in Afghanistan non-governmental organisations as Pro Asyl criticise that these decisions cannot be justified.

Germany granted political asylum to the Russian opposition leader Oleg Liskin

BERLIN - For the first time German authorities granted asylum to a Russian national. While chancellor Schröder demonstrates unity with the Russian Head of State Putin German asylum authorities recognised the precarious situation in Russia. Human rights activists welcomed the decision.
